The main entrance to Evergreen Cemetery is across from Baxter Woods and next to the Portland campus of the University of New England . Parking is available in the cemetery during its posted seasonal hours. In addition to the main entrance, there are pedestrian entrances on Brentwood Street and Woodvale Street with on-street parking nearby.

Directions to Evergreen Cemetery:

From downtown Portland: From Portland’s Monument Square, follow Congress Street west for 0.3 miles and turn right onto Forest Avenue / Route 302. Follow Forest Avenue for 2.2 miles and turn left onto Walton Street (you will see Vivian’s Drive-In and a traffic light at this intersection). Follow Walton Street to the end, and turn right onto Stevens Avenue. Evergreen Cemetery will be on your immediate left.

From the south: Take Interstate 95 North to Exit 47 (Rand Road / Westbrook Arterial / Route 25). Turn right at the end of the ramp onto Rand Road / Route 25. Turn right at the lights onto Brighton Avenue / Route 25. After one mile, turn left onto Woodford Street (you will see Cumberland Farms and a traffic light at this intersection). Turn left at the next light onto Stevens Avenue. Evergreen Cemetery will be on your left.

From the north via Interstate 295: Take Interstate 295 South to Exit 6B (Forest Avenue / Route 302). Bear right at the end of the ramp onto Forest Avenue. After 1.6 miles, turn left onto Walton Street (you will see Vivian’s Drive-In and a traffic light at this intersection). Follow Walton Street to the end, and turn right onto Stevens Avenue. Evergreen Cemetery will be on your immediate left.

From the north via Interstate 95: Take Interstate 95 South to Exit 103 (Interstate 295 South / Brunswick). Follow directions For Interstate 295 above.

From the west via Route 302: Take Route 302 East to Morrill’s Corner in Portland. Turn right onto Stevens Avenue (soon after McDonald’s). Evergreen Cemetery will be on your right.

From the west via Route 25: Take Route 25 East to the Rosemont section of Portland. Turn left onto Woodford Street (you will see Cumberland Farms and a traffic light at this intersection). Turn left at the next light onto Stevens Avenue. Evergreen Cemetery will be on your left.

Public Transportation:

Greater Portland Transit District’s METRO Bus system provides access to Evergreen Cemetery.

Monday – Saturday: Bus Route 3 (North Deering / Stevens Avenue) includes a stop by the main gate to the cemetery. This route does not run on Sundays.

Sunday: You can take Bus Route 4 (Westbrook / Riverside) to reach the vicinity of the cemetery on Sundays, but will need to walk the rest of the way. You can get off the bus at the intersection of Woodford Street and Stevens Avenue and walk north for 0.8 miles along Stevens Avenue to Evergreen Cemetery (the cemetery will be on your left).

You can visit the METRO bus website for information on times and fares. Once on the bus, tell the driver you are going to Evergreen Cemetery and he/she can assist you.

Via bicycle or hike:

Google Maps provides suggestions for bicycle and pedestrian-friendly routes to the cemetery. When you’re there, just click on “Get directions” and use the bicycle or walking icons to customize your route.

Portland Trails, a local land trust, maintains several walking and bicycle trails throughout the city. You can use some of these along your route to the cemetery.

Passive recreation while on cemetery grounds is strongly encouraged by the City of Portland. Please be respectful in your use of this area by following these guidelines:

  • Limit recreational use to walking, x-country skiing, and jogging.
  • Please take ball, Frisbee, and other games to another park location.
  • Leave flowers, trees, and other plants for enjoyment of others
  • Carry-in, carry-out trash.
  • In active cemeteries, such as Evergreen and Forest City, please be mindful of funeral services. Quietly and respectfully conduct your leisure in another part of the cemetery grounds.
  • Treat gravestones with care and encourage children to do so as well, many are quite old and fragile.
  • Dogs are allowed in Evergreen and Forest City Cemeteries on a 25’ leash. Please respect graves and gravestones when walking pets. Scoop after your pet and carry out bagged waste.
